  • Beginning in 1958, the Department of Parks and Recreation has been acquiring land in the eastern Antelope Valley for the purpose of Wildflower and Wildlife Sanctuaries. To date, nine such sanctuaries exist as follows:



  • 1. Alpine Butte Wildlife Sanctuary
  • 320 acres
  • 2. Butte Valley Wildflower Sanctuary
  • 320 acres
  • 3. Blalock Wildlife Sanctuary
  • 140 acres
  • 4. Big Rock Wash Wildlife Sanctuary
  • 160 acres
  • 5. Carl O. Gerhardy Wildlife Sanctuary
  • 639 acres
  • 6. Jackrabbit Flat Wildlife Sanctuary
  • 114 acres
  • 7. Mescal Wildlife Sanctuary
  • 100 acres
  • 8. Theodore Payne Wildlife Sanctuary
  • 320 acres
  • 9. Phacelia Wildflower Sanctuary
  • 160 acres
