California Toad
(Bufo boreas halophilus)
The California Toad is a large brown to green colored toad. It is commonly found near lakes, streams, and gardens where the ground is moist. It has a very quiet chirping croak. It is mainly active during the evening and night. During the dry parts of summer they move under ground where they live in their own burrow or an abandoned burrow of other animals.

California Treefrog
(Hyla californiae)
The California Tree Frog is a small frog that is found near water that has many reeds. It has gray skin with dark areas. In the evening, the California Tree frog will float at the surface of the water and gives off a very low-pitched croak. If bothered, it will dive deep into the water.


Pacific Treefrog
(Hyla regilla)
The Pacific Tree Frog is a small frog with gray skin and a black band over its eyes. It is found near streams, around lakes, and in meadows. They are very noisy in the evening and at night. The call of the frog dies out in the early morning as the temperature drops.


FAMILY RANIDAE - True Frogs

Mountain Yellow-legged Frog
(Rana muscosa)
Being a true frog, the Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog has dorsal bones that are sometimes very distinct. It is a dark brown frog with black spots. It is a very rare occurring frog in the San Gabriel Mountains, and in the Devil's Punchbowl it has only been seen in Holcomb Canyon (Mickey Long 18, July 1973)
