Carl O. Gerhardy Wildlife Sanctuary

Location:

Carl O. Gerhardy Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Antelope Valley along 240th St. East, between Avenue "M" and Avenue "N".

Size:
639 acres

Elevation:
? feet above sea level.

Accessibility:
The sanctuary is easily accessible by the paved East Avenue "O" east to 240th St. East left to Avenue "N" (dirt road heading East)

Plant Communities:
The dominant plant communities here are Joshua Tree Woodland and Creosote Bush Scrub. The two communities are about equally represented. Other shrubs such as Mormon Tea, Winter Fat and Cheesebush, and many annual and perennial wildflowers are common throughout the sanctuary. The area affords an excellent view of the Antelope Valley, desert buttes, and lofty peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains to the South.

Present Condition and General Observations:
Gerhardy is in good natural condition except along the roadways where illegal dumping of trash (old furniture, washing machines, computer monitors and other garbage) is an ongoing problem. This is one of the most picturesque of the Sanctuaries and it is hard to conceive the thoughtless behavior to deface such a natural treasure.
