The Devil's Punchbowl is layers of sandstone that have folded into a syncline.
ANTICLINE / SYNCLINE
ANTICLINE / SYNCLINE CROSS-SECTION
When sediment is layed out it forms horizontal layers. (EXPERIMENT) Anticlines and synclines are folds in the earths strata caused by compression. A syncline is a V shaped fold and an anticline is an A shaped fold. Many reverse faults are near anticlines and synclines because they also are caused by compression.

syncline
In the photograph above you can see the Punchbowl syncline. In the center of the photograph you can see the axis of the syncline. On the left side you can see the Pinyon ridge. The pinyon ridge is being pushed up by the Pinyon fault causing the rocks on the left to be tilted up. On the right side of the photograph you can see the San Gabriel Mountain range. The San Gabriel mountains are being pushed up along the Punchbowl Fault. The rock slabs on the right side are being tilted upward by this growth.

The Punchbowl is not an ordinary syncline. It is a plunging syncline. This meens that the one side of the syncline is tilted upward in relationship to the other side.
